Getting sufficient sleep is a big part of a healthy positive lifestyle – and we’re all about staying happy and healthy here at Melt. Now, British people aren’t exactly world leaders in sleep hygiene. In fact, according to a 2016 study, we’re one of the most sleep-deprived nations in the world, with more than one in three of us regularly not getting our full forty winks. So with that in mind, here are Melt’s top tips to getting better sleep (with a bit of help from our luxury scented candles, of course!)

1. Try And Stick To A Routine

One of the easiest ways to make sure you get enough sleep is to build a routine. The hard part is sticking to it! You’ve probably got an alarm set for the morning, so that’s half the job done. All you need to do really is apply the same principle to bedtime. By building this routine you get your body used to working on a regular amount of rest, leaving you feeling refreshed in the morning. Try to avoid sleeping in, even on weekends. Otherwise, the disruption to your pattern can hit you like jetlag (it’s broadly the same principle). For the same reason, try to avoid napping for anywhere longer than fifteen to twenty minutes. It might feel good, but it’s not great in the long run!

2. Keep A Lid On Your Artificial Light

Exposing yourself to natural daylight during the day is proven to have health benefits in terms of your mood and energy levels, but unfortunately, the same can’t be said of the blue light from our iPads at night! It’s best to avoid bright screens within one to two hours of your bedtime, including the TV. It can play havoc with your internal clock, and have a knock-on effect on your energy levels. You can always try reading before bed instead.

3. Relax!

Let’s be honest, we’ve all got a lot of worry in our lives. Residual stress, worry and anger from your day can all make it difficult to wind down. Switching off from your social media, phone and other communications just before bed is always a good plan, unless you absolutely need them. It’s a key step to avoiding stress. If you’ve really got a to-do list you need to quickly complete, focus on one task at a time, and leave the others for another day. You can’t do much about sending that long email when it’s ten minutes to bedtime, for example. (OK, you can, but you shouldn’t!)

So what should you do instead to relax? Well, this is where our luxury scented candles come in. Now, quick thing to note: we DON’T recommend leaving a candle burning as you go to sleep, as it can be a fast track to causing a fire. However, briefly lighting one to relax you before you turn in can work wonders. We’ve talked before about the fantastic ways you can benefit from candle meditation, which is a great way to clear your mind before you drift off to the land of nod. Some candles are better suited to this than others – our Noir luxury scented candle is ideal for putting your mind at rest, before you get your body to do the same!

Of course, that’s just our suggestion – maybe you’ve got your own! You can take a look at our other recommendations for the best bedtime scents, or take a trip to our little shop on the farm and see what we’ve got on the shelves!
