How to get a country Christmas aesthetic for your home

Christmas gifts

We’ve always been country bumpkins here at Melt, and have a very deep and enduring affecting for our beautiful surroundings in the Ribble Valley. So when it gets to December each year, there are few things we love more than getting our rural surroundings into the Christmas spirit, especially with a luxury scented candle or two. So if that’s something you’re after for your own home, we’ve got a couple of suggestions we think you’ll like…

Make good use of natural materials

You can’t very well have a country Christmas in your home without some natural materials! Depending on how you choose to use them, they can give your home a simple and understated look, or give your interiors a vibrant lease of life. If you’d like, you can collect twigs, berries, sprigs and evergreens from your local surroundings – as long as it’s safe to do so! (Don’t forget that while berries are amazing for giving a pop of colour to your interiors, they can also be poisonous to children and pets, so be sure to keep them high out of reach.)

As well as decorating your shelves, tables and other surfaces, you can even use your collected materials to make your own wreath, too. It’s a wonderful traditional way to welcome friends and family into your home, and there’s a certain pride in making it yourself! In fact, on that note…

Get creative!

If you’re a creative soul – and we’re willing to bet you are – you can scale back the glitter in favour of rustic and modest decorations you’ve made yourself. While we might not be seeing many in-person workshops for this sort of thing after the mad year we’ve had, there are still plenty of tutorials online, and you can learn how to make reindeer, stars, angels, or little Santas. It can even be a great family activity!

It’s worth taking a moment to think about colours, too. Mixing tartans and stripes can be a subtle but effective way to bring pattern into your home at Christmas. You can jazz up food or tableware with your festive decorations too, such as topping white or cream stoneware with greenery, or using grosgrain ribbons and sprigs of holly to give a festive feel to your traditional dishes!

Don’t neglect the classics

A rural Christmas aesthetic is one that lends itself very well to a modest, scaled-back appearance… but that doesn’t mean you can’t indulge in the decorations we all know and love best. Tinsel can be wound round bannisters or hung across shelves – you might want to choose the deeper reds and golds to give a luxurious offset to your touches of greenery. And of course, fairy lights. They’re most popular outside the home, but they can provide a lovely cheerful atmosphere when placed selectively around your interiors, too!

Cosiness and comfort are both essential elements of a rural Christmas, so it’s also worth taking the time to make your living room as cosy as you can. Cable knit blankets and cushions, and soft fur throws are great for snuggling up to against the cold outside, while shag-pile rugs also make fantastic luxurious touches to your living room – and if you choose them carefully, they can even provide a bit of festive colouring too!

Set the mood with luxury scented candles

Sensory experiences are one of the best ways to create a rural Christmas atmosphere in your home, and we’re pleased to say that’s exactly where we can help here at Melt candles! We’ve got an amazing range of winter and festive scents for you to choose from. Our Nutmeg and Vitiver scented candle has been lovingly crafted to emulate that beautiful smell you get when the logs are piled up against the log burner – that distinctive sweet, spicy, woody perfume like no other. Our Saddle handmade scented candle, on the other hand, has been described by one of our customers as ‘the ultimate country house fragrance’, and we certainly agree!

Or if you’re looking for exceptionally festive scents, we recommend – of course – our Christmas scented candle. It’s warm and welcoming, rich and spicy – the very essence of Christmas in a candle! Or if you’re looking for something a little different to the traditional orange and spicy Christmas fragrances, we think you’ll love our Noel candle, which resonates with the woody notes of resin and very soft pine. You can shop them all right here on our site, which is operating as normal.

If you decide to take a trip to see us on our little Shop on the Farm, we would love to see you! We’ve made every arrangement to make sure you can shop safely with us. We will take your orders at the door, pick & pack them for you, and take your payment through the window. There will be mulled wine in disposable glasses while you wait, outside, the log burner will be lit (weather permitting), and you need never set foot inside the door!
