With Autumn now in full swing, we thought it was just about time to take a look at one of our most seasonal of seasonal candles. You guessed it, it’s our delightful little lady Autumn. Carefully crafted by our expert chandeliers here at Melt, Autumn fits right in with the season. This week, we’re taking a quick overview of the ingredients that Autumn uses to transport your senses.

Some of the main ingredients in our Autumn candle are:

  1. Cinnamon
  2. Clove
  3. Nutmeg
  4. Orange

Well then! Ready to find out all about them?

Cinnamon

cinnamon

Ah, cinnamon. It’s that unmistakeable scent for the chillier months; warming, balmy but with that edge of spiciness to it. The properties of cinnamon are well known and loved in aromatherapy – it has a wonderfully relaxing effect on the body, which means it’s commonly used in massage oils. It’s even, on occasion, been used as mild pain relief. Cinnamon also has notable antibacterial properties, and is great for staving off all sorts of wintry nasties like colds, coughs and viral infections. You can probably already see why this makes it so great for the autumn!

From the mental health side of things, cinnamon is frequently used to treat depression, and can provide a comforting boost in the darker days of the autumn season.

Clove

clove

Clove is known as a sweet, spicy fragrance, and it’s got a fascinating historical background. Before it reached the mainstream in Western culture, the Chinese used it for thousands of years as a fragrance and spice. We don’t blame them! Nowadays, clove essential oil is known as a powerful anti-inflammatory, and is even said to provide powerful antioxidant benefits. In other words, not only does it smell amazing, but it can be good for you, too!

Nutmeg

Another warming and spicy fragrance – spotting a pattern? – the scent of nutmeg is distinctively sharp, with a musky note. It’s been popular throughout history, and various cultures have found some quite fascinating uses for it. The Indians, for example, used it to treat intestinal issues, while the Egyptians used it for embalming the dead. The Elizabethans believed it was an effective cure against the plague.

Today, it’s used to stimulate the senses, and relax the body and mind. Many people use it as a soothing sleep aid, which makes it particularly well suited to the cosier autumn and winter months.

Orange

orange

Orange serves as both a support and a wonderful counterbalance to the other ingredients in our Autumn candle. In the aromatherapy world, orange has gained a reputation as being fantastic for alleviating anger, depression and especially anxiety. This makes it useful against Seasonal Affective Disorder, which can start to affect some of us in the autumn. It can vary in severity, but basically it’s a condition in which the darker days are linked strongly to a corresponding drop in mood and happiness. The uplifting yet calming sense that orange essential oil can provide a valuable boost to our mood.
