In The Heart of The Ribble Valley

Our journey at Backridge Farm began in 2002, when we moved into the old stable block and set up a dedicated workshop. Before that, we had been carefully pouring our luxury handmade candles in kitchens and basements since 1999, one batch at a time. But once we settled in, something lovely started to happen – curious visitors began turning up at the door, hoping to take a candle home. We weren’t sure if our tucked-away spot in the Ribble Valley was quite right for a shop, but their warmth and enthusiasm nudged us to give it a try. And so, our little shop was born – which over the decades, has expanded and grown into the beautiful, calming, retail retreat it is today.

As word spread, more and more visitors found their way to our door, drawn by the distinctive fragrances, gentle flicker, and long-lasting quality of our handmade fragranced candles. We quickly realised we needed to create a space where you could fully explore the range in true Melt style. So, alongside our signature collection of luxury handmade candles, we introduced a curated selection of organic skincare, niche perfumes, cashmere, leather goods and jewellery – all chosen to complement the calm, welcoming atmosphere we’ve become known for.

The most recent addition to our shop came when we took over an adjacent unit to create our Chandlery and Reading Room, which now sits beautifully alongside the main gift shop. Here, all our handmade luxury scented candles are thoughtfully displayed around a central fragrance bar, inviting you to explore each scent at your own pace. Many visitors end up staying a while longer, sinking into a cosy chair with a complimentary glass of wine and one of our carefully chosen books. From seasonal tales to timeless favourites, our reading selection is there to encourage slow, mindful moments – the perfect match for our candles.

Now, we’ve been proudly making our handmade luxury scented candles for over 25 years. Each one is hand-poured using traditional methods and fine fragrance blends, crafted to burn slowly and fill your space with a rich, lasting scent. From soft florals to deeper, more atmospheric blends, every candle is designed to help you set the mood, mark a moment, or simply enjoy the everyday.

No matter the season or the changeable Ribble Valley weather, you can always expect a warm and smiley welcome when you visit us. Plus, with parking right outside the door, it means you can scamper in very quickly when it’s raining. Which, being in the Ribble Valley, it does a lot!
