The evenings are getting chillier, and autumn is moving in – so there’s no better time to add a little bit of hygge to your home in time for the more wintry seasons! Hygge (pronounced hue-gah) is a Danish concept originally, and there are many possible ways to describe it. It doesn’t really have a direct translation; cosiness is the closest one, but hygge is much more than that. It’s about enjoying the simple pleasures in life, like friends, and family, and contentment. Sounds great, right? It’s especially suited to the autumn season, so this week on the blog we’ve decided to give you a few tips on how to add a little hygge to your home.
Your living room is the natural place to start introducing hygge – after all, it’s where we all spend the majority of our time. If you’ve got a fireplace (lucky you, if so), it’s likely that it’s gone unused almost the whole summer. Even if you’re not a fan of darkness and coldness, autumn and winter does at least give you the perfect excuse to start using a fireplace again! Stock up on firewood and kindling, and maybe check your smoke alarms while you’re at it.
Next it’s time to start thinking about the sofa, or your favourite armchair. With the warmth of summer you’ve probably taken off any fluffiness that wasn’t strictly essential, but now that autumn’s here it’s time to start piling all that back on again. Remember, volume is the key – it’s odd how just the sight of luxurious fluffy pillows can make us feel instantly warmer, while a thick, all-encompassing throw brings all the best things about your bed right to your sofa. For maximum effect, use dark, intense colours like forest greens or chocolate browns. Now, you’re ready to get snuggly!
Of course, you couldn’t do all that to your living room without doing up your bedroom to match – otherwise, you might find yourself always snoozing on your cosy sofa! You can give crisp white linen bedsheets a wonderfully warm feel with a heavy knitted throw, or by adding some plump comfy cushions. As a bonus, you can even use them as makeshift pillows in a pinch – handy for afternoon naps where you don’t want to get fully tucked up just yet.
Lighting is another big factor – you might be surprised at how different the same room can look just by changing the lighting. Rather than bright white bulbs, consider switching them out for low-wattage bulbs, and maybe even warmer tones. Orange, red and purple are popular colours, or if you’re feeling particularly creative, you can even string up some fairy lights across the room for a colourful but calming effect.
Your bathroom might not be the first choice when you’re looking to put a bit of hygge in your house, but that’s one of the ways it can be so effective!
