How to make your home the perfect place to relax

why its important to take the time to relax feature image

As a nation, it’s safe to say we could all do with a bit of relaxation right now – life are stressful enough already! We’ve all been spending a lot more time at home as of late, so it seems the perfect time to think about how to make them more relaxing spaces to be. We’ve got a fair bit of experience in that area – our luxury scented candles provide an amazing way to enhance a sense of comfort and peace in your home. Here are a couple of our other top tips!

1. De-clutter

When it comes to making your home a more relaxing place to be, there’s really nothing like decluttering it. We know it’s something we mention often in these sorts of posts, but it really can’t be overstated! There’s a lot of psychology in this, but we’ll give you the quick version – basically, unnecessary mess overloads our minds with visual and mental stimuli, so our brains have to work harder to pick out the important or attractive stuff.

There’s also the practical frustration of actually not being able to find what we’re after at any given moment, and it can create feelings of guilt, or stress that it’s yet another item on the to-do list before we can properly settle down to enjoy ourselves. You don’t have to do it all at once – it’s just a matter of mastering the art of keeping on top of it. Find a place for everything, so that you can put everything in its place – and if you can’t find a place for something in particular, it’s worth considering whether it’s worth having around at all. We know (all too well!) that it’s a running battle for most of us out there at the moment, especially when spending all this time with family – but trust us, if you’re going to ever truly declutter then it’s a battle worth fighting!

2. Light up your life

The amount and quality of light in a room honestly has such a huge effect on how we feel. You probably already know that already – it’s why most people prefer not to have bare bulbs lighting up every room! Unadorned main lights can be useful if you’re literally just trying to illuminate somewhere, but if you’re actually trying to feel more comfortable in it, don’t be afraid to express your creativity.

Ideally, you should try and get as much natural light into a room as you possibly can. Natural light is proven to be the most energising and comfortable form of light for us, since humans are basically daylight creatures. You might be able to get more natural light into a room than you think – have a think about rearranging the room if necessary. Moving bookcases or cupboards or sideboards can open up the amount of natural light into living rooms or studies, making you feel far more comfortable in them.

In the evenings on the other hand, you might want to think about closing the curtains and turning on some smaller lights. Lights in orange or yellow can make us feel cooler and more comfortable than harsh white lights, and obviously some flickering scented candles provide an especially soothing light!

3. Think about textures and fabrics

As you might know if you’ve ever visited our shop, personally we’re huge fans of a country aesthetic here at Melt Candles – as are many of our customers living right here in the Ribble Valley! Natural materials are best for making people feel right at home, such as furniture of wood and leather. Anything that softens your interior is also a big plus – you might want to consider rugs, blankets, sheepskins and linen. Wicker baskets are personal favourites of ours, but squishy sofas and cosy armchairs have a certain universal appeal!

4. Have a ‘Snuggle Corner!’

Having a personal space that’s all to yourself can be wonderful for having a bit of quiet time and relaxing after a particularly tough day, whether that’s at work or just trying to get through the trials of the day at home. It doesn’t have to be anything particularly complex – just a small corner or space filled with the things you love most, like a few books and a comfortable chair – and a good reading lamp, of course! It can be a space where you want to get busy doing something creative, like writing or drawing, or just sit in peace for a moment. It can be the perfect setting for your favourite luxury scented candle, as you the space with a scent that most relaxes you – whether that’s our light Hush scent, or our luxurious Cashmere.

relaxing at home

We’ve got one final important tip for creating a relaxing atmosphere at home – above all, make it a place that you and your family feel comfortable in, not necessarily anyone else. Interior designers and trends can give you some brilliant ideas, but you don’t need to stick rigidly to what’s ‘in’. Instead, make it a space that’s truly ‘you’. After all, you’re the one spending the most amount of time in it, so it’s all about experimentation, and what works for you!

Here at Melt, we can certainly help on the scented candle front. We’ve got a fantastic range of scented candles, including firm customer favourites like Joy and Dance – perfect candles for the summer season!
