Life is full of hustle and bustle, we all can get caught up in the rush particularly at this time of the year, with Christmas and New Year. However, with a solid mindfulness practice and soothing luxury scented candles you can take more time to appreciate the little events in life.

As a regular practice, mindfulness can help you be more self-aware, lower stress, get better sleep, have better resilience to stress or conflict, and even improve your relationships. Let’s get to it!

Take a break from technology

Many people can struggle with putting the phone down over the festive season. There’s always so much to capture, the smiles of your loved ones, the Christmas lights, or even your amazing meal (we don’t blame you!)

However, if you are looking to incorporate mindfulness into your life one of the best things you can do is put the phone down when visiting with others!

This will allow you to actively participate in what you’re doing. You can enjoy a moment or event a lot more if you aren’t actively distracted by capturing everything for social media.

Additionally, putting your phone away during meal times and social gatherings will make others feel more loved, appreciated, and valuable.

The less time you spend on the screen is more time in which you can enjoy the company of others.

Enjoy the silence

Mindfulness is about becoming aware of what you’re experiencing – including thoughts, feelings, or events. The best way to become present in the moment is to light a candle and sit in silence for a moment or two.

You could find a comfortable place to sit on the floor and focus on your breathing. As you inhale focus on the complex smell of the candle. What do you notice? As you exhale you can focus on how the air moves through your body.

Alternatively you can find a quiet place to sit and close your eyes. You can then slowly acknowledge every thought or feeling that comes into your mind. Take it slow and try to pick out only one thought at a time. Often simply acknowledging the feelings or thoughts you’re having helps you become more self-aware.

Self-awareness is key to living a happy, healthy lifestyle because you can recognise and address any feelings in an emotionally mature way.

Create a daily practice

You may find it helpful to incorporate what’s sometimes called an “anchor habit” into your life. You might already have a practice, like meditation, praying, daily affirmations, drawing, sketching, breathing, yoga, lighting a candle or even journaling.

The point of a daily practice is to do a small activity at the same time everyday to centre, or anchor, yourself. By doing this you have an activity to look forward to every day, that can help you stay mindful throughout the day.

Do art, crafting or baking

A great way to increase your mindfulness or to be very ‘in the moment’ is with an activity that helps you focus. Creating a piece of art, completing a craft project, or baking is the perfect way to engross yourself completely in the moment.

You may find, like many people, that completing craft projects can be quite fulfilling. Activities like knitting, drawing, sewing, baking, or even making scented candles are projects that can serve as stress relief as well as a way to boost your creativity! Plus, small projects can help you feel accomplished and can help ground you to the present moment.

The best time to incorporate mindfulness is right now, there’s no need to wait until next year. So, as you begin the year a new, set clear goals, incorporate mindfulness practices where you can and you’ll have a recipe for success.
