Ever feel a little baffled when reading our scented candle ingredients list? Don’t know your Patchouli from your Amber?

We know that making a decision on which one of our scented candles to choose can be hard at the best of times – there’s just too many gorgeous ones to choose from! But if you don’t know much about essential oils, the decision can sometimes be a little trickier. You’ll either go with the candle that sounds most like you, has the most attractive sounding ingredients, or just have a lucky dip! So, on the Melt blog over the next few months we’ll be taking a closer look at some of our most used ingredients, telling you everything you need to know about their smell and properties. With our help, you’ll be a fragrance connoisseur in no time!

A closer look at Sandalwood

Our first ingredient focus is Sandalwood, the warm, wood aroma that is just perfect for autumn. It comes from the sandalwood evergreen tree, found in Eastern India and Western Australia. We incorporate Sandalwood into many of our candles because it helps to bring together other oils and adds a graceful, sweet, woody aroma, without taking away or overpowering any of the other oils and fragrances. It’s commonly used as a base note in our candles and helps to hold the scent of other lighter oils that tend to fade quickly – helping that delicious combination of fragrances to last longer.

The benefits of Sandalwood

Sandalwood is often praised for its meditative properties and for calming and focusing the mind – so it’s a great option for those of you who need some help switching off at the end of the day and winding down. As well as having soothing and calming properties, it’s also uplifting – making it the perfect pick-me-up scent whenever you’re feeling a little sad or stressed.

Relax with Sandalwood

As Sandalwood is renowned for its deeply relaxing properties, we thought we’d share one of our favourite meditations that you can try at home while burning one of our Sandalwood infused candles. Try it – you’ll be impressed with your newfound inner calm.

The ultimate de-stress 5 minute meditation

1. Sit in a comfortable position with your legs crossed and close your eyes.
2. Breathe quietly in and out through your nose. Feel each breath as it moves through you, remaining mindful of it at all times.
3. Begin to notice how your breath changes as you focus on it, and how your awareness changes in turn.
4. When your mind begins to drift to thoughts about your day or the future, gently bring it back to your breath.
5. Continue this for 5-10 minutes, breathing in and out and focusing solely on your breath.
6. At the end of your meditation, wiggle your fingers and toes, then stretch your legs and arms slowly, bringing yourself back to the moment.
