Hygge moments

hygge moments

The Danish concept of hygge has taken the world by storm over recent weeks – influencing households all across the globe. And if you haven’t heard of the concept of hygge before, it’s about time you did. After all, it may just change your life…

What is hygge?

Cosy log fires, lazy Sundays at home eating home-baked pie and cuddling up with the pets on the sofa … they’re all “hygge”. Sounds rather nice, right? The Danish concept is usually translated into English as “cosiness” but it really means so much more than that.

Hygge (pronounced hoo-ga) is a whole way of life; an attitude and approach to life that results in happiness and satisfaction. Practised in Nordic countries like Denmark, it’s no wonder that countries like Denmark are the happiest in the world.

About the concept, Helen Russell, author of The Year of Living Danishly: Uncovering the Secrets of the World’s Happiest Country, says:

“Hygge seems to me to be about being kind to yourself – indulging, having a nice time, not punishing or denying yourself anything. All very useful come January when in the UK everyone’s on diets or manically exercising or abstaining from alcohol.”

“There isn’t so much enforced deprivation in Denmark. Instead you’re kinder to yourselves and so each other. Danes don’t binge then purge – there’s not much yo-yo dieting in Denmark. No wonder they’re happier than we are in the UK.”

Sounds good to us!

At Melt, we’ve been practising the happy hygge concept for some time now and even incorporate it into our brand values. Our product range is designed to lift your mood and prove that those little extras, like scented candles, can go a long way.

Practise hygge at home

Hygge is so simplistic – making it easy to incorporate into your routine and in your home. All you need to do is embrace the little luxuries in every day.

Dim the lights in your lounge and pop on one of our scented candles. Candle scents like Angel and Blush are bound to make you feel cosy and warm. Don’t forget to pamper yourself too! Treat yourself to a long hot bath each night, filled with lush Dr Hauschka Soothing Bath Oils. You could even pop on a natural face pack too – like our Clayspray. How lovely!

Why not start practising hygge today and treat a friend to one of our gift vouchers? Spread the happiness and show a little friendship – it’s the thought that counts.
