This week at Melt, we wanted to take a look at something amazing that we spotted over at Amnesty International: candles with the power to make a difference. See? We always knew candles were something special!
Burning to make a difference
Last month, international human rights charity Amnesty International auctioned off a range of 30 very special, limited edition candles by artistic duo Mark Landwehr and Sven Waschk, each depicting a different type of injustice: sexual slavery, torture and warfare.
And while, on the face of it, these candles represented terrible realities, each hid a wonderful secret: a beautiful, solid bronze figurine depicting a hopeful outcome for those in need.
The first candle sold for a staggering $1,322, and the total raised reached almost $16,000 – talk about burning a hole in your pocket! 😉 We’re just so thrilled for Amnesty that their Freedom Candles project has raised so many vital funds for them – brilliant idea; brilliant cause!
