As you may have gathered if you’ve been following our blogs here at Melt, we absolutely love Christmas – especially the seasonal scented candles! But sometimes – even at this time of year – real life can get you down, and as anyone can tell you, it’s hard to cheer back up again just because someone says ‘it’s Christmas’. That’s why this week on our blog here at Melt, we’ve collected a couple of top tips to help you stave off any of those holiday blues!

  1. Be Creative

Being creative is often underestimated in its power to make us happy. Something as simple as drawing a picture, writing a story, or penning a short poem can help give us a fantastic sense of achievement, which then works wonders in lifting our mood. But what if you’re a bit rubbish at drawing, or you’ve never written a story before? Well, to be honest, who cares? No one’s going to be judging it – it’s just for you! Write or draw or do what you want, and allow yourself to be satisfied with the success of the activity, notwithstanding the results.

  1. Get Out And Get Active

Depending on your preferences, this could be a trip to the gym, or it could be just a quick walk with the dog. (And if you follow us on Instagram, you’ll already know how much we like doing that here at Melt HQ!) There’s a lot of science behind this, too – exercise boosts serotonin and dopamine in the brain, two chemicals that have a drastic effect on your mood. It’s no wonder that some experts regard regular exercise as being at least as effective as antidepressants.

  1. Unplug For A While

We’re surrounded by screens so much that, weirdly, it’s easy to forget how little time we get without them. Many of us go to work and do most of our jobs in front of a computer screen, then sit on the train with our iPhones in front of us before settling down to relax in front of the TV. Every once in a while, it’s good to get away from all that, and from the endless chirps and notifications on your phone. Assign yourself a little time every so often – even if it’s just half an hour each day – where you’re not sat in front of a screen, and put your phone on Airplane mode. You might be surprised at how peaceful it becomes!

  1. Be Spiritual

Many people find that attending church can really boost their mental state and relieve stress – which is especially helpful given how many of us find ourselves in church for Sunday services at this time of year, even if we don’t consider ourselves religious. It doesn’t have to be just religion, though. On the blog a short while ago, we talked about the benefits of candlelight meditation – and it’s no less relevant in this context, either!
