New Year’s resolutions are hard. It’s no secret. But then again, it’s possible that we’re all making ours harder for ourselves than they need to be. Some of the biggest problems with common resolutions is that they’re unrealistic (and therefore impossible to reach), we set too many of them, and we attempt to immediately stop our current habits. Sometimes all of that at once – so is it any wonder we don’t always succeed?

But as well as stockists of luxury scented candles, here at Melt we’re also occasional purveyors of wisdom, too! Here’s how to help yourself achieve your New Year’s Resolutions, in four easy steps.

Start Small – and Be Consistent!

As we’ve just touched upon, the big problems mainly happen when we try to take on too much at once. The best way to stick to your New Year’s resolution is to settle yourself gradually into better habits, and not try and accelerate into them too quickly.

Say you wanted to get fit – instead of telling yourself you’ll go running three times a week, first commit to just once a week, or even just twice a month. There might not be any noticeable difference in your fitness immediately, but at first it’s not about that. It’s all about teaching yourself to form good habits – the experts say that on average, a new habit takes 66 consecutive days to properly develop. Give yourself a chance!

Remind Yourself Why You’re Doing It

Lots of resolutions ultimately fail because when it comes right down to it, you don’t have a clearly defined reason for doing it, so you can’t see a reason to continue. After all, it doesn’t hurt you to give up, so it seems like the easiest option. To fight this, try and find a concrete reason for getting in shape. Is it to do with your health? Maybe you’re preparing for a marathon, or maybe you’re thinking about trying dating. Possibly there’s a particular dress you’ve got your eye on (we know the feeling!) and you want to look at your best in it.

Whatever the reason, make sure you remind yourself of it often. It could make all the difference to getting off that sofa again!

Reward Yourself For Success

Rewarding yourself is a vital part of forming new habits. It might sound silly at first, but just think about parenting – 80% of that is teaching children good habits which they then stick to. You wouldn’t expect to try and teach your children new habits without rewarding them now and again, and the same goes for you, too! Congratulate yourself when you make the effort, and maybe allow yourself a treat every now and again. Once these milestones start becoming less of a big deal, that’s when you know it might be time to change it up a little.
